York’s tiny Reddit community

York students have formed a minor community on Reddit. Created by Roark Bolivar, a graduating economics major, the “subreddit” /r/YorkU has a paltry 200 subscribed members. Members discuss topics like the location of the best place to sleep on campus, how to handle York parking tickets, and whether the Tim Hortons sell lattes.

U of T’s subreddit, /r/UofT, is more popular, with 936 members. Bolivar attributes their success to a more active moderator. They also have bi-monthly meetings and an extensive list of U of T links.

Bolivar says he “really didn’t think about popularity” when he launched /r/YorkU. In fact, for the first six months he forgot about the subreddit while he focused on his last year in school.

As a commuter who was lacklustre about clubs on campus, he sees the appeal of online communities. “Online works like a club but with less commitment and more convenience,” Bolivar says. “It’s perfect for commuters.”
