Kinsmen safety issues addressed with walk-through

The university administration has made a swift move in response to concerns raised by social work students about their safety on campus.
Rob Castle, vp finance and administration, has done a preliminary walk-through of the Kinsmen Building area since the social work students’ safety woes were published in Excalibur.
The building—which is located on the edge of campus near Keele Street, and is near the forested area of Danby Woods—holds a majority of social work classes on campus.
Other than goSAFE services, there are no other services available to students who are walking to and from the main campus area from Kinsmen. A shuttle service which used to transport students in and out of the area was cancelled last year due to low ridership.
“We’re very mindful of the concerns—we take them as genuine and serious concerns,” says Castle. He notes there are lighting issues in the perimeter of the Kinsmen Building area, and that those lights are in the process of being fixed.
Castle says the university is looking into a range of possibilities to address the safety issues, though he does not wish to speculate which solutions will be implemented.
